The Unfleeced Purbeck field guide

Dorset without a car.
More coast. Less parking.

Pick a free beach or coastal walk. Reveal your bus, the ferry connection and what to expect on the final stretch. Starting with Studland and Swanage—not all of Dorset just yet.

Numbers match the places below. Pan or use + / − to explore. Pins mark places or labelled access areas, not bus stops. No walking route is drawn.

Two routes. A coast full of possibilities.

This is a free-place discovery guide, not a live journey planner. We cover selected destinations on the direct 40 and 50 corridors. A place hidden by your starting-point filter may still be reachable with a change—we have not mapped those journeys here.

50 · Bournemouth, ferry & Studland

From Bournemouth Railway Station, the Purbeck Breezer 50 travels via Sandbanks and the chain ferry to Studland and Swanage. Choose this corridor for the Studland beaches and viewpoints. Check ferry disruption and the current timetable before setting off.

40 · Poole, Wareham & Swanage

The Purbeck Breezer 40 reaches Swanage by road via Wareham and Corfe Castle. Our Poole and Wareham filters show free Swanage destinations reachable from the bus station. The castle itself charges admission and is not included as a free attraction.

Entry and access sources checked 2026-09-12. Travel fares, seasonal restrictions, weather and services can change. Walking distances are not calculated from map pins; unmeasured approaches are clearly labelled.

Knoll Beach · 50

A sandy Studland day out, with dunes behind you and Old Harry on the horizon.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Knoll House Hotel

Continue to the signed Knoll Beach visitor access from Ferry Road. Use the National Trust site map for the approach; the stop-to-beach distance has not been measured.

Sand and uneven ground. The wider beach includes a signed naturist area. Check the current access guide for beach wheelchairs and facilities.

Shell Bay · 50

Leave the ferry traffic behind for sand and dunes on the northern end of Studland Bay.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Shell Bay Ferry

Use the signed Shell Bay beach access via the National Trust car-park area. Check the site map before leaving the ferry stop; walking distance is unmeasured.

Take care around ferry traffic. Stay on the beach away from the harbour entrance and ferry slipway; this is not a suggested swimming route.

South Beach, Studland · 50

A smaller sandy bay beneath the village, looking towards the chalk headland.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Studland Village, Beach Road

From the village, use the signed South Beach access near the Bankes Arms. Consult the National Trust site map for village paths; the final walk is unmeasured.

Sloping access and uneven surfaces. Do not use the shoreline around headlands as a shortcut between beaches.

Old Harry Rocks viewpoint · 50

The famous chalk stacks, seen from the mainland coast path — not from the rocks themselves.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Studland Village, Beach Road

First reach the South Beach / Bankes Arms trail start from the village. The National Trust publishes a 3.5-mile circular trail: that is the whole trail, not the bus-stop walk. The approach is unmeasured.

Exposed, unfenced cliff edges. Stay well back, keep children close and dogs under control. Use the inland coast path, never the cliff base or isolated rocks.

Fort Henry, Studland · 50

A Second World War observation bunker with a view over the bay, on the National Trust estate.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Studland Village, Beach Road

Use the National Trust map to follow village paths towards Fort Henry above the beach. This is a countryside approach, not a verified short walk; distance is unmeasured.

Uneven paths and steps; not a step-free recommendation. Keep away from cliff edges and follow any on-site closures.

Swanage Central Beach · 40 / 50

Sand, a seaside promenade and a town full of picnic-supply options. No pier ticket needed.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Swanage Bus Station · Poole Bus Station: bus 40, get off at Swanage Bus Station · Wareham Railway Station: bus 40, get off at Swanage Bus Station

Follow Station Road towards the seafront, then Shore Road to Central Beach. The town approach has not been route-measured, so no walking time is promised.

Beach dog restrictions apply seasonally. Check council guidance. Swanage Pier and hire activities are separate from this free beach visit.

The Downs, Swanage · 40 / 50

Open grassland above the southern edge of the bay, in Peveril Point and The Downs nature reserve.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Swanage Bus Station · Poole Bus Station: bus 40, get off at Swanage Bus Station · Wareham Railway Station: bus 40, get off at Swanage Bus Station

Walk through town towards the southern seafront and the signed Downs paths. Use the council reserve map to plan the uphill approach; distance from the bus station is unmeasured.

Slopes and unfenced cliffs. This suggestion is the grassland and signed paths, not the rocky foreshore at Peveril Point.

Durlston Country Park · 40 / 50

Meadows, wildlife and a free castle visitor centre above Swanage. Bring walking shoes and a flask.

Bournemouth Railway Station: bus 50, get off at Swanage Bus Station · Poole Bus Station: bus 40, get off at Swanage Bus Station · Wareham Railway Station: bus 40, get off at Swanage Bus Station

Durlston describes an approximately one-mile uphill walk from Swanage / the bus station. Follow its signed Victorian Trail or the Park Road approach; allow for hills and your own pace.

A proper uphill walk, not a bus to the entrance. Durlston reports no D5 funding this year. Some paths have cliff edges; use the official access guide.

Free admission does not mean free travel, refreshments, equipment hire or special events. Check official access information for your needs: sand, slopes and cliffs mean these are not blanket step-free recommendations.
